Spotlight on Volunteers!

We would like to say a big thank you to Athens First Baptist Church for their work at the shelter this month! In addition to their consistent volunteering and donations in the past,
Athens First Baptist has painted and prepared a room for a new resident,
prepped our common room and JobTREC office for painting,
cleaned the common room ceilings, walls, and toys,
replaced light fixtures and fans in resident rooms,
done some electrical and plumbing work,
and replaced many worn out items in our resident rooms and bathrooms.
They've also committed to purchasing new couches, rugs, and other furniture for our common area!
What a blessing this group has been for us!

First Baptist is planning a day at the end of the month to paint the common room, JobTREC office, and other odds and ends at the shelter. These are some pretty large spaces, so that's a lot of painting! If you're a skilled painter and are interested in helping with this project, please email volunteer@helpathenshomeless.org and we'll get details to you.

What's up in 2012

2011 Was a great year for Athens Area Homeless Shelter!

It was the 25th anniversary of programming for the shelter

Several programs were restructured and created and Shea Post became executive director of the shelter

Volunteer groups brought dinners, ran programs for residents and their children, and helped with shelter maintenance and upkeep.

Our Website, Twitter, Facebook, and Blog were re-vamped and updated to get news and events to you faster and more effectively!
Donations, grants, and fundraisers provided Christmas gift cards for all residents, collected over 600 winter coats for the Athens community, and funded a great deal of shelter programming and living expenses for residents including high efficiency washers and dryers.

So what all do we have to look forward to in 2012?

A new location for JobTREC

Continued participation with the Northeast Georgia Homeless Coallition, Athens Resource Center for the Homeless planning, Georgia Shares, HandsOn Northeast Georgia, UGA student organizations, and local religious and community organizations
Northeast Georgia Homeless Coalition

ARCH Athens Georgia Shares, Inc. Campus Life

Increased programming for residents including skills classes for moms and activities for kids

Lots of work on the shelter!

Holiday Meals

Holidays are an important time: a chance to reconnect with families, to show appreciation through gifts, and to look at the blessings in life. Here at Athens Area Homeless shelter, holidays are also a time when we need lots of volunteers. While we have dinner volunteers booked for many dates in November and December, we are in need of groups to provide meals during the weeks surrounding Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve. For a full list of the dates we need, please see our calendar at http://helpathenshomeless.org/mobilize/volunteer/. Although many of our residents spend the actual holidays with friends or family, the days before and after holidays need groups to volunteer.

If you have family coming in for a holiday and would like to do a service project together, or are looking for a holiday project to do with your Church or other religious organization, please consider providing dinner at the shelter. If  you have any questions, please contact AAHS staff at 706-354-0423 or at volunteer@helpathenshomeless.org. Thank you so much to all of our volunteers and donors this holiday season. We are so grateful for your support, and we couldn't help the families that are here without you.

A Big Thank You!

We were offline for TWO DAYS! We forgot how frequently we use the internet. Thankfully, we’re back and we want to say a big thank you thank you thank you to Chip Reid, professional computer services for your business. Chip worked with us and around our schedule and we are so grateful! We couldn’t provide shelter and support to our residents without community members like Chip who support us. Thanks Chip!
